Thank you for looking into it. The alias command is indeed available, it was a syntax error on my part. Either way, it would be good to define a few, such as:
alias egrep='egrep --color=auto'
alias fgrep='fgrep --color=auto'
alias grep='grep --color=auto'
alias l='ls -CF'
alias la='ls -A'
alias ll='ls -alF --color=auto'
